A group of seven accused individuals of Germany's left-wing extremist organization stand trial over series of attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and prosecution case

Recently, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist group along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany state the group was behind targeting sites in Germany and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

The trial involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., are additionally accused for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E., emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or remain detained.”
